If I had a dollar for every time someone asked how they could improve their balance, I’d be rich. 🤑🤑 Balance exercises are my most popular request in class, yet everyone dreads doing them.
.
So why does balance get HARDER as we get older?
.
Let’s blame our vestibular system. Say what?
.
Your vestibular system is one of the sensory systems in our bodies that provides input to our brains senses the orientation of our body relative to gravity and thus helps us maintain balance. It can also provide sensory information about motion and equilibrium.
.
This system develops in early childhood when we climbs, roll, cartwheels – basically regularly moving our bodies – things we stop doing as we get older, thus losing our ability to properly gauge the relation of our heads and bodies to gravity.
.
Inside our fitness and yoga classes we run at Maple Grove United Church here in Oakville we incorporate exercises that improve and strengthen our vestibular systems. Often times our students don’t even realize we’re doing so. 😉
.
Improving your balance is going to take time. It takes consistently showing up practicing to see a difference.
.
Just ask my lovely model in the photo Jan – who has been consistently showing up to work on her balance even during the pandemic.
